“After the election” A styling I did as a part of BOSL magazine.

Hello Readers!

Today’s post is going to be more of your traditional sort of blog post, though I might just vlog on this topic at some point. Like many of you, I have been feeling VERY strongly about the state of the government in the United States since before the recent election and even more so after it. I have been able to safely assert my view on things (mostly) from my RL/SL Facebook, and I tend to rant a lot to those closest to me in my RL and my SL. I have wanted to make a post like this for a while, but life and hesitation tend to get in the way sometimes. Thankfully I saw Strawberry’s post and was motivated to finally do it.

It is amazing to me how divided we as a nation are. I tend to avoid any political talk, I don’t enjoy conflict or arguing. I am one who will remain quiet until motivated to speak, which usually comes as a result of the insanity of statements made by others. As am American I have taken my right to vote very seriously. I am stunned every election at how many Americans do not care to vote or who think their votes don’t matter. As an educator of young children, I have done my best to instill in my students the importance of being an active citizen. I have mixed feelings about having been out of the classroom during this political season (I went from classroom teacher to instructional coach without a class of my own). For as passionate as I have felt about the issues, I wonder if I could have remained neutral as I have in past elections. I will never know.

I have become an avid listener of all kinds of political podcasts, though I have cut back quite a bit now…for my own sanity. One fact I heard on a podcast a while back was just how much of the voting population elected this man. This man whom I consider a bigot and demagogue (among other things). This man offends me on so many levels. He offends me as a woman, a Latina, and a mother. He offends me as an educator and he offends me as an American. I will never directly call him my president, because he is not. He does not represent me and he does not respect me. I try not to resent those Americans that brought this nightmare into my life. I know they all had their reasons, but he was the wrong choice for the change they were so desperate for. This man’s election is a low point in American history and American democracy. Nearly HALF of the voting population DID NOT VOTE. This man won with 25% and the electoral college. Voter turn out has been a long standing issue, I know that. I just am stunned that just 25% of the voters in this country decided this bigoted demagogue was what was best for America.

I am a Democrat (shocker, I know). I had never labeled myself anything more than that..liberal, left, whatever…just Democrat. But I am feeling more left than ever. I have never been an activist. I have never shared my political views publicly, that’s just not polite right? Well, the times have clearly changed. I am more vocal than I ever have been when it comes to politics, because people need to wake up and do something, myself included.

As an RL friend of mine likes to say on her podcast, I am WOKE. I am activated, I will take action. I will be an even more active part of the democracy I live in. I am a part of the resistance.

Just in Case the President Forgets What America Stands For

Due to an undemocratic constitutional defect, the person the American people did not want has assumed the presidency. While he remains in office, we must resist to limit the damage. For some fun virtual resistance, I formed a Flickr® group called Avatars Against Trump. Please consider joining and adding your contributions. It’s a brand new group, but it’s already getting some great contributions.

It is not limited to Second Life®, so people who play other online games with content generated by their users will be able to contribute their screenshots and photos. There is another virtual resistance group on Flickr, the Body Language Challenge inspired by Aria Watson’s first life series of photos.

By the way, I am so proud of Linden Lab™ standing up with integrity and humanity against the immigration ban.

There’s so many things to resist as the regime is wreaking havoc everywhere you look, but folks need to pick their battles and pick their strategies. It is okay if resistance is chaotic and unstructured. It is okay for resistance to be fun. Resistance should be fun! It is about serious threats and is serious business, but when resistance is powered by joy, it lasts longer and is more powerful. Joy is resistance.

There are many groups organizing resistance and you should choose the ones who appeal to you. There are many issues which need resistance, you should choose the ones close to your heart. When resistance is dispersed and decentralized, it is harder to attack and dismantle. Let resistance be surprising, unexpected, spontaneous.

If you want guidance for small daily acts of resistance, there are a few web sites.

The best thing is to find local organizing groups to support. You can do this at Indivisible Guide. This connects you with a new group of like-minded people who can lift you up when you are feeling despair. It will also be more fun to resist in a group. People learn a lot of skills volunteers with community groups and if you’re protesting, you will be out in the fresh air–which we need to enjoy while we have it.

Meanwhile, show some virtual resistance at Avatars Against Trump. If you do a blog post, please add it in comments. (They are working again.)

The New Second Life Avatars

New SL Avatars

They are impressive!

We have come a long way since texture shoes (yes, texture shoes!).

A new group of avatars can be found under Avatar > Choose and Avatar. Wear the individual avatars to have the outfits, skins et al, appear in your inventory. Pets are included and mixing and matching can be done. Many outfits work well with your own shape and adjust somewhat, but these are not universal fit garments.

Avatars are legacy with mesh outfits — some of which are exceptionally well-made. The animation overriders hiccup, but are certainly better than nothing at all!   Outfit comes with wearable pets, perfect for the teenagers.

It took me all morning to get this shot (that’s me as the guy). There are a lot of VERY rude people. I wouldn’t call them greifers really (well maybe some). But staunch photographers persevere in adverse conditions.

Linden Lab Adds 10 New Fantasy Starter Avatars

10 new avatars added

Trying out the new avatars in Second Life🙂

Today Linden Lab has introduced ten new fantasy starter avatars in Second Life and they are available right now to try out. They look really nice and rather cool. The good news is that everyone can personalise these new starter avatars. Yay!🙂

“These new avatars have normal “system” bodies with mesh wearables, which makes it easy to change their hair, clothes, accessories, and more!”. The new addition includes a “diverse range of “genre” styles including steampunk, vampires, sci-fi, post-apocalyptic… and beyond!”.

Me menu > choose an avatar > select them to wear

10 new starter avatars

New residents joining Second Life will be able to select any of these new starter avatars during the signup process and that’s great to hear. New starter avatars today look more realistic and they are simple to customise.

Linden Lab uploaded this internal video today introducing the 10 new starter avatars. Watch the video below and please spread the word.🙂

Back in late 2006 when I joined Second Life there were so few avatars to choose from and they were pretty basic back then. I found this historical photo of what the early avatars in Second Life used to look like back in 2002 onwards. It’s just incredible how far Second Life has come since then for avatars.

My first snapshot of my avatar back in late 2006

In the blog post the lab talks about the history of the long-term starter avatar collections…

Back in May 2014, we introduced a round of mesh-body starter avatars to replace even older starter avatars (that you can still find in your inventory’s Library > Clothing > Initial Outfits folder).

Then in November 2015, we superceded all of those with a new batch of “Classic” avatars using “system” bodies that are easier to customize, partially in response to Resident requests pointing out the inflexibility of the all-mesh bodies.

The blog post goes on to say that with the introduction of Avatar Complexity (ARC) project it’s made creators more aware of balanced content in Second Life. The lab talked about how recently with the roll out of JellyDolls has again helped raise awareness of ARC and how it’s helping to control the resources the viewer spends rendering other avatars.

LL Listens to Mentors! New “Classic” Starter Avatars!

For the last year or so, those of us who frequently help newcomers to Second Life have complained about the all-mesh starter avatars.  They can’t be adjusted with the Appearance sliders, can’t wear traditional layer-based clothing, and when a newbie does manage to detach the mesh body, they often leave the alpha mask layer on and disappear entirely.

This is all very confusing to a new resident, to say the least!  A lot of the newcomer help areas have developed signs and tutorials to help explain this situation and persuade newcomers to switch to one of the older, “Classic” starter avatars, which are much easier to customize.

Now Linden Lab has (finally!) come to the rescue.  They’ve added a new series of Classic starter avatars, and they are available at the “Choose Your Avatar” page during the signup process.  These new avatars are part mesh, where mesh makes sense, but they respond to the Appearance sliders, and can wear clothing layers.  Not only that, but they look great too!
